Allantoin Powder
Allantoin Powder
Allantoin Powder (Cosmetic Ingredient)
Our Allantoin Powder is a fine white cosmetic powder that makers add to the water phase of creams, lotions, toners and other skin and body products. It is a skin-conditioning ingredient with a soft, soothing feel that formulators like for products aimed at dry, sensitive or easily irritated skin.
Allantoin occurs naturally in plants such as comfrey, and cosmetic-grade allantoin is typically made by synthesis as a nature-identical ingredient. It is used at low levels, so a small pack goes a long way.

How to Add Allantoin to a Cream or Lotion
- Weigh. Weigh the allantoin on a small scale. Most recipes need only a gram or two.
- Heat the water phase. Warm your water or hydrosol to about 60–70 °C.
- Dissolve. Stir in the allantoin until the water is clear. Keep stirring or use a small whisk.
- Emulsify. Combine with your oil phase and emulsify as usual (see the pairs list for emulsifiers).
- Cool and finish. Add heat-sensitive ingredients and your preservative at the temperature your preservative supplier recommends.
Tip: Do not add allantoin straight to a cooled mixture, as it will not dissolve and can leave a gritty texture.
Usage Rates & Starting Points ▼
These are common starting points, not fixed rules. Results vary with your recipe, so always test a small batch first.
| Product | Starting amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cream or lotion | 0.1–0.5% | Add to the heated water phase. |
| Toner or mist | 0.1–0.3% | Warm the water to dissolve, then cool. |
| Wash-off products | 0.1–0.3% | Dissolve in warm water before adding surfactants. |
| Maximum in most formulas | Up to about 2% | Higher levels may stay cloudy unless the formula is kept warm. |
Start low. More is not always better, and very high levels can recrystallise as the product cools.
Tips & Troubleshooting ▼
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Gritty or cloudy product | Allantoin did not dissolve | Dissolve it fully in warm water (60–70 °C) first. Keep the level at or below 0.5% for a clear result. |
| White specks as the product cools | Too much allantoin for the water available | Reduce the level, or increase the amount of water phase. |
| Thin product | Allantoin does not thicken | Use a thickener such as xanthan gum or a carbomer. |
| Cloudy toner | Added cold | Warm the water, dissolve the allantoin, then cool before adding other ingredients. |
Safety & Handling ▼
This product is a cosmetic raw material for external use only. Do not swallow it, keep it out of reach of children and keep it away from the eyes. Fine powders can irritate the airways, so avoid creating dust clouds. Do a patch test on a finished product before first use and stop using it if irritation occurs.
