Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is steam-distilled from the flowers of the plant, sourced from France, producing a colourless to pale yellow, clear, mobile liquid with a very fresh, sweet, green-floral and herbaceous aroma. One of the most versatile and best-loved essential oils, its gentle profile makes it a natural starting point for both beginners and experienced formulators.
Lavender has a long history of traditional use in calming, relaxing blends, and is a favourite in diffuser blends aimed at supporting restful sleep and easing everyday tension. On the skin, well diluted, it's valued in skincare formulations for all skin types, and it's one of the very few essential oils sometimes used neat in very small, targeted amounts on minor skin concerns.

Lavender is one of the most versatile heart notes in perfumery — try it at 5-10% of the fragrance concentrate to round out a blend, or pair with Bergamot and Clary Sage for a classic fougère-style opening.
Skincare & Massage Oil Inclusion Rate
Lavender is generally well tolerated, but as a skin sensitiser it's still worth keeping leave-on skincare to around 1-3% of the total formulation, well below IFRA's generous limits for most categories. Always patch test the finished blend.
Aromatherapy & Diffuser Blend
For a calming bedtime blend, try 2 drops Lavender with 2 drops Cedarwood and 1 drop Clary Sage; for a fresh, relaxing blend, combine 2 drops Lavender with 2 drops Grapefruit and 1 drop Geranium.
