Butters: refined shea butter is pale with little scent, while unrefined organic shea butter keeps its natural colour and aroma. Refined cocoa butter is hard and deodorised, mango butter is soft and almost odourless, kokum butter is firm and stable, and argan butter is made from argan oil.

Waxes and fats: carnauba wax is a very hard plant wax that adds firmness, gloss and slip to balms and polishes. Cosmetic grade tallow is refined beef tallow from New Zealand grass-fed cattle suet, for balms, bars and soap. For a softer wax, see our beeswax.
