How to Solubilise Essential Oil in Water

  1. Weigh. Weigh the PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil and the essential oil or fragrance. A common starting point is about 2-3 parts PEG-40 to 1 part oil, and some oils need more.
  2. Combine. Add the PEG-40 directly to the oil and stir until you have a smooth, clear mix.
  3. Add water slowly. Add the water slowly while stirring vigorously. Adding water too quickly can make the mix cloudy.
  4. Check clarity. If the mix is cloudy, add a little more PEG-40 next time or use less oil.
  5. Preserve. Add a suitable preservatives and any other water-soluble ingredients.
  6. Bottle and test. Pour into a clean bottle and check the clarity again after 24 hours.

Tip: Always add the water to the oil and PEG-40 mix, never the other way round, and add it slowly.

Using It in Sprays, Hair & Bath Products ▼

These are common maker starting points, not fixed rules. Results vary with your recipe, so always test a small batch first.

Use Starting amount Notes
Room or linen spray About 2-3 parts PEG-40 to 1 part oil Mix with the oil first, then add water slowly. Preserve and shake before use.
Toner or facial mist As low as the oil allows Use only skin-safe oils at appropriate levels. Test your own recipe.
Shampoo or conditioner About 0.5-5% Helps solubilise fragrance. Test the clarity.
Bath oil or bath product About 1-10% Helps oils disperse in bath water. Oils can make the tub slippery.
Perfumes and body sprays As needed to clear the mix Use with water and alcohol. Test.

Cloudiness or crystals can appear over time. This is normal and reversible and does not affect quality.

Tips & Troubleshooting ▼
Problem Likely cause What to try
Cloudy mix Water added too fast, or too much oil for the solubiliser Add water slowly, increase the PEG-40, or reduce the oil.
Crystals or cloudiness in the bottle Cool storage or ageing This is reversible. Warm gently and stir. It does not affect quality.
Oil floats to the top Not enough solubiliser Increase the PEG-40 in the next batch.
Spray smells weak Too little fragrance, or oil trapped Check the ratio and that the mix was clear before adding water.
Skin feels irritated Fragrance level too high or an unsuitable ingredient Lower the fragrance, and patch test.
Mix spoils Water-based products can grow mould and bacteria Use clean tools and add a suitable preservative.
Safety & Selling Your Products ▼

This product is a cosmetic raw material for external use only. Do not swallow it, keep it out of reach of children and keep it away from the eyes. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling the concentrated product, patch test finished products before first use and stop using a product if irritation occurs.

PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil is a raw ingredient and must be formulated before use. Do not apply it to skin neat. It contains a PEG, which some makers prefer to avoid in 'natural' products, so check your own positioning. Water-based sprays need a suitable preservative.
