Walnut Shell Powder
Walnut Shell Powder
Walnut Shell Powder (Coarse Natural Exfoliant for Body and Foot Scrubs)
Our Walnut Shell Powder is a coarse powder made from finely ground walnut shells (INCI: Juglans Regia Shell Powder). It is a firm, natural physical exfoliant that stays hard in water and does not dissolve.
It is used by makers in body and foot scrubs and in soap, where it gives a distinct, rougher scrub than finer powders. Because it is coarse, it is better suited to body and foot products than to delicate facial skin.

How to Make a Simple Body and Foot Scrub
- Mix. In a bowl, stir 2 tablespoons of walnut shell powder with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil and 1 tablespoon of sugar or fine salt.
- Scent. Add a few drops of an essential oil such as peppermint essential oil if you like, keeping to safe levels.
- Patch test. Try a small amount on the inside of your arm first.
- Massage. Massage gently over damp skin of the body or feet with small circles. Avoid the face, eyes and any broken skin.
- Rinse. Rinse with warm water, pat dry and moisturise. Make fresh and use it straight away.
Tip: Wet the powder with a little oil or glycerine first, then add it to the rest of the mix. This helps it spread evenly and avoids clumps.
Using It in Soap & Scrubs ▼
These are common maker starting points, not fixed rules. Results vary with your recipe, so always test a small batch first.
| Use | Starting amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Body or foot scrub | 2 tbsp walnut shell powder + 2 tbsp oil (+ 1 tbsp sugar or salt) | Mix fresh and use straight away. Add a suitable preservative to anything you want to keep. |
| Cold process soap | About 1-2 tsp per 500 g of soap oils | Stir in at trace. Gives a coarse speckled bar. Test the feel. |
| Melt and pour soap | About 1 tsp per 500 g of base | Stir in just before pouring at a thicker temperature so it does not all sink. |
| Scrub bar | As set by your recipe, up to about 20% | Test how scratchy the bar feels. |
| Hand scrub | 1 tsp mixed with oil and a little soap | Use fresh. |
Walnut shell is coarse. Use less for a gentler scrub, and avoid it on the face.
Tips & Troubleshooting ▼
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Mix spoils or smells off | Plant powders grow mould in water | Mix fresh, use straight away and discard leftovers. Add a suitable preservative to anything you plan to keep. |
| Lumps or specks in a product | Powder not dispersed | Wet the powder with a little oil or glycerine first, then add it to the rest of the mix. |
| Stains skin or fabric | Natural plant pigments | Protect clothing and surfaces, and rinse skin well after use. |
| Colour changes in soap | Natural colours are sensitive to pH, heat and light | Test a small batch first, and use a skin-safe mica if you need a stable colour. |
| Scrub feels too rough | Particles are coarse | Use less, mix with more oil, or blend with a finer powder such as fine pumice powder. |
| Powder sinks in soap | Heavy particles | Stir in at a thicker trace or temperature and pour quickly. |
Safety & Selling Your Products ▼
This product is a cosmetic and craft raw material for external use only and is not intended to be eaten. Keep it out of reach of children, keep it away from the eyes, and do not use it on broken or irritated skin. Fine powders can irritate the airways, so wear a dust mask when weighing or pouring. Do a patch test before first use and stop using it if irritation occurs.
Walnut shell powder is made from nut shells. People with a tree nut allergy should avoid contact. The particles are hard and coarse, so keep it away from the face, the eyes and broken skin. Keep scrub residue out of drains.
Plant powders can grow mould once they are wet. Mix water-based recipes fresh and use them straight away, discard leftovers, and add a suitable preservative to any product you plan to keep. Store the dry powder sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
