How to Make Lip Balm with Our Base
- Weigh. Weigh out the amount of base you need. Allow roughly 5 g for each 5 ml tube, plus a little extra for the pouring jug.
- Melt. Melt the base gently in a double boiler (one pot sitting in a pot of hot water) or in the microwave in short bursts, stirring in between, until just liquid.
- Flavour. Take it off the heat and let it cool slightly. Stir in a few drops of lip balm flavour oil, or a lip-safe essential oil used at a very low level.
- Pour. Pour straight away into tubes or containers.
- Set. Leave to set without moving them, then cap and label.
Tip: Pour a test tube first. Once you are happy with the flavour and texture, make the full batch.
Usage Starting Points ▼
These are common starting points, not fixed rules. Always test a small batch first.
| Addition | Starting amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lip balm flavour oil | A few drops per 100 g | Add a little at a time and test. Add when the base has cooled slightly. |
| Essential oil | Very low level (well under 1%) | Not every essential oil is suitable for lips. Check before use. |
| Colour | Lip-safe colourants only | Our mica powders are sold for soap and candles, not for lips. |
| Extra vitamin E | Not usually needed | The base already contains tocopherol. |
Anything you add must be suitable for use on the lips. The finished product is your responsibility.
Tips & Troubleshooting ▼
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Gritty or grainy texture | The butters cooled slowly or were overheated | Melt the base completely, then pour and let it set quickly (a few minutes in the fridge helps). Avoid overheating. |
| A dip or hole in the middle of the tube | The balm shrinks as it sets | Top up with a little melted base once the first pour has started to set. |
| Flavour is weak | Too little flavour, or it was added when the base was too hot | Let the base cool slightly before stirring in flavour, and add a little more a few drops at a time. Test before you fill. |
| Balm is soft or sweats in warm weather | Warm storage | Store finished balms in a cool place away from sunlight and heat. |
| Colour or flavour oil looks separated | Not mixed in | Stir well while the base is liquid and before you pour. |
Safety & Handling ▼
