Copaiba Balsam Essential Oil
Copaiba Balsam Essential Oil
Copaiba Balsam Essential Oil (Copaifera officinalis)
Copaiba Balsam (Copaifera officinalis) is steam-distilled from the oleoresin of a tropical evergreen tree native to the Brazilian rainforest. This balsamic essential oil has a pleasant, sweet, slightly spicy, woody-earthy aroma that harmonizes with other aromatic compounds, and offers many benefits within cosmetic, personal care, aromatherapy and wellness applications.
Along with traditional use for managing pain and inflammation, Copaiba Balsam is beautifully skin nourishing and a lovely oil to include in blends formulated for skin support — traditionally used to help reduce the appearance of scarring, support the skin's healing after burns, and ease other skin-related challenges. It's also traditionally used to help reduce unwanted microbial activity, to ease painful muscle spasms, and as an excellent fixative, stabilizing and strengthening the scents of other essential oils in a blend.
Emotionally and energetically, Copaiba Balsam is traditionally regarded as soothing and protective, and can help heal old, deep emotional wounds thanks to its deeply balancing character. With its deep, grounding aroma, it's also a wonderful choice for supporting deep, restful sleep, and is traditionally said to possess aphrodisiac properties, used to inspire sensual moods.
A little care goes a long way: Copaiba Balsam is one of the gentler oils in our range, but it's still worth diluting before applying to the skin and doing a quick patch test first. As with all essential oils, keep it out of reach of children, and check with your healthcare provider before using during pregnancy.

Burners and vaporizers
In a diffuser, Copaiba Balsam is traditionally used for its soothing, protective, deeply balancing effect on the emotions, to help ease old emotional tension, to support deep, restful sleep, and — thanks to its grounding, sensual aroma — as a traditional aphrodisiac.
Blended massage oil or in the bath
Well diluted in a massage oil or in the bath, Copaiba Balsam is traditionally used to help manage pain and inflammation, to ease painful muscle spasms, and to help reduce unwanted microbial activity on the skin.
Blended in a cream/base cream
Diluted into a cream or lotion, Copaiba Balsam is beautifully skin nourishing and traditionally used in blends formulated for skin support — including to help reduce the appearance of scarring, support the skin's healing after burns, and ease other skin-related challenges.
Blends Well With
| Although essential oils blend well with one another, Copaiba Balsam oil goes particularly well with other essential oils such as frankincense, sandalwood, cedarwood, lavender, ylang ylang, bergamot and other citrus oils. |
Usage & Formulation Guide ▼
For soap makers, natural perfumers and cosmetic formulators. These are starting points, not finished formulas — always confirm compliance, stability and safety (including IFRA usage limits) for your own finished product before use.
Perfumery & Fine Fragrance
A prized natural fixative with a warm, balsamic, woody-peppery character reminiscent of labdanum. Copaiba Balsam anchors and extends lighter top notes, and pairs beautifully with sandalwood, frankincense, cedarwood and citrus oils in woody, oriental and amber-style compositions. Its principal constituent, beta-caryophyllene, carries no meaningful IFRA restriction and is generally regarded as non-sensitising when fresh — a helpful starting point is 2-5% of the fragrance concentrate, adjusted to the finished style.
Leave-On Skincare & Cosmetic Formulation
This is genuinely one of Copaiba's strongest uses — its long-standing reputation for soothing irritated, scarred or sun/burn-affected skin translates well into modern leave-on formulas. Given its mild hazard profile (a Category 3 skin/eye irritant, with skin sensitisation described as rare on its own safety data sheet), it can be used at a comparatively generous 1-3% in daily facial and body creams or serums, or up to 5% in targeted spot-treatment balms aimed at scarring or blemish-prone skin. As always, patch-test the finished formula before full use.
Aromatherapy & Massage Blends
Dilute at 2-5% in a carrier oil for massage oils and bath blends (roughly 12-30 drops per 30ml). Its warm, grounding, balsamic aroma and traditional muscle-soothing reputation suit sports-recovery blends, while its calming, balancing character makes it a natural choice for bedtime and stress-easing massage oils.
Cold Process Soap Making
Copaiba Balsam performs as a base note and natural fixative in cold process soap, helping lighter citrus or floral top notes hold through cure. Use at up to 3% of total oil weight; as a thick, resin-derived oil it benefits from gentle warming and thorough blending with your other fragrance oils before adding at trace, to avoid seizing or uneven distribution.
