Wintergreen Essential Oil (Gaultheria procumbens) is steam distilled from the plant's leaves. Its sweet, minty aroma comes almost entirely from methyl salicylate, which typically makes up 96–99% of the oil — one of the most concentrated single-constituent essential oils in common use.
Wintergreen's warming, penetrating character has made it a long-standing favourite for post-exercise rubs and massage blends, and its distinctive minty-sweet aroma is also valued in perfumery and potpourri.
Our supplier's own documentation names Gaultheria procumbens with an origin of India, though we've noted an inconsistency in that same supplier's marketing material referencing Nepal — and most Wintergreen oil sold commercially today is genuinely distilled from the closely related species Gaultheria fragrantissima, typically sourced from Nepal or China. If the specific botanical species matters for your use, please contact us for supplier documentation.
This one deserves a little extra care: Wintergreen Essential Oil is genuinely toxic if swallowed — as little as one teaspoon has caused fatal poisoning in a small child — so it must always be kept locked away from children and pets, never ingested, and well diluted before any topical use. Burners and vaporizers
A drop or two of Wintergreen in a diffuser or oil burner brings a fresh, minty aroma to a room.
Blended massage oil or in the bath
Well diluted (2–3% maximum), Wintergreen is a traditional favourite in post-exercise massage rubs for tired, worked muscles.
Blended in a cream/lotion
Used sparingly and well diluted, Wintergreen adds a warming, penetrating note to topical body care formulations.
