Soda Ash (Washing Soda) - Dense
Soda Ash (Washing Soda) - Dense
Soda Ash (Washing Soda) (Dense, Sodium Carbonate)
Our Soda Ash (Washing Soda) is dense sodium carbonate, a free-flowing white granular powder that has been used for laundry for generations. It softens hard water so detergents and soaps work better, and it is a simple, low-cost ingredient for homemade laundry powder and heavy-duty cleaning.
Crafters also use soda ash as a dye fixer for plant-based fibres such as cotton, and it is used to raise the pH of pool water. It is strongly alkaline, so wear gloves and eye protection. It is not for use on skin.

Usage Starting Points ▼
These are common starting points, not fixed rules. Test on a small hidden area first.
| Use | Starting amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Laundry load | 1/4–1/2 cup (about 50–100 g) | Add to the drum with your detergent. |
| Dye fixer soak | About 1 cup (about 200 g) per 4 L water | Soak the fabric for about 20 minutes, then follow your dye instructions. |
| Cleaning solution | 1 tbsp in 1 L hot water | Wear gloves. Rinse surfaces well. |
Never mix with acids in a closed container, as the gas released can build up pressure.
Tips & Troubleshooting ▼
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Powder is hard or lumpy | Absorbed moisture from the air | Store sealed and dry. Break up lumps before using. |
| Dull or damaged surfaces | Too strong an alkaline solution | Test on a hidden area first, dilute more and rinse well. |
| Dye colour is weak | Fabric not pre-soaked | Soak in a soda ash solution before applying fibre-reactive dye. |
| Skin feels dry after handling | Alkaline contact | Wear gloves, wash with water and moisturise. |
