Mica Powder Black (Colour for Soap, Candles and Crafts)

Black mica powder adds a shimmery, pearlescent colour to melt and pour soap, candles, bath bombs and other craft projects. Like all micas, it can have a shimmer similar to glitter.

It comes in two sizes: 8 g in a small pottle, or 50 g in a snaplock bag. We measure by weight, not volume, so you know exactly how much you are getting.

About This Colour

A fine, free-flowing pearlescent powder with a typical particle size of about 10 to 60 microns. It does not dissolve in water or oils, so it stays suspended as a shimmer through your soap, wax or resin. Mica is a naturally occurring mineral, and our coloured micas are made by combining it with titanium dioxide and/or iron oxides and colouring pigments, which vary from colour to colour. Our mica powders are vegan, palm free and not tested on animals.

How Much to Use

The colour depends on how much you add, so start small and build up. As a guide, 1 g will colour up to about 10 kg of base, and about 2 kg of base for a very strong colour. You will need less in a white base than in a clear or translucent one. Always test a small batch first.

How to Use It

  1. Melt and pour soap and candles. Add the mica directly and stir well. If the base is too hot the mica can sink to the bottom, so let it cool a little before pouring.
  2. Cold process soap. Most micas work in cold process soap, but some colours are unstable in the high pH of raw soap, so test first. Mix some mica into about 1 tablespoon of a light carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil, then add about 1 teaspoon of this at a time until you reach the colour you want.
  3. Other crafts. Mica also works in faux paint and other craft projects.
  4. Mix your own shades. Combine colours to create new ones, and keep notes of your ratios.

Tip: Screen colours vary from device to device, so the powder may look slightly different from the photo.

Safety

For external use only. Keep out of reach of children, avoid breathing in the powder and keep it away from the eyes. We sell this colour for soap, candle and craft use. If you plan to use it in makeup or on the lips or eyes, check that it is suitable first. Anyone selling what they make is responsible for the safety assessment and labelling of their own products. See the Safety Data Sheet in the Product Documents section at the end of this page.
