Manuka Essential Oil
Manuka Essential Oil
Manuka Essential Oil (Leptospermum scoparium)
Manuka Essential Oil (Leptospermum scoparium) is steam-distilled from the leaves and twigs of the plant, sourced from Coromandel, New Zealand, producing a pale, clear yellow liquid with a characteristic, acrid, warm and woody aroma. Renowned as a New Zealand native, it's highly valued in natural skincare, aromatherapy and wellness formulations.
Manuka is widely used in products designed to support blemish-prone, oily or irritated skin, making it a popular addition to creams, balms, soaps, skincare treatments and scalp care products. In aromatherapy, it's appreciated for its fresh, herbaceous aroma, commonly diffused during seasonal changes or added to steam inhalations, bath blends and vaporisers. When diluted with a carrier oil, it also makes a soothing addition to massage blends.
A little care goes a long way: Manuka Essential Oil is a mild skin and eye irritant and a skin sensitiser, and may be harmful if swallowed and enters the airways. Dilute before topical use, patch test first, and never ingest.

Uses ▼
Diffuser & steam inhalation
Diffused during seasonal changes or added to steam inhalations and vaporisers, Manuka helps create a clean, comforting environment and supports overall wellbeing.
Massage & bath blends
Diluted with a carrier oil such as avocado or jojoba, Manuka makes a soothing addition to massage blends aimed at easing tired muscles, and works well in bath blends.
Skincare blends
Well diluted, Manuka is valued in creams, balms, soaps and scalp-care formulations for blemish-prone, oily or irritated skin.
Blends Well With
| Although essential oils blend well with one another, Manuka oil goes particularly well with other essential oils such as cedarwood, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, rosemary, sandalwood and tea tree. |
Usage & Formulation Guide ▼
For soap makers, natural perfumers and cosmetic formulators. These are starting points, not finished formulas — always confirm compliance, stability and safety (including IFRA usage limits) for your own finished product before use.
Fine Fragrance & Perfumery Accord
Manuka's warm, terpenic, faintly herbaceous character works well as a herbal-woody top-to-heart note — try it at 2-5% of the fragrance concentrate, paired with Cedarwood and Rosemary for an earthy New Zealand-inspired accord.
Skincare & Massage Oil Inclusion Rate
IFRA's own limits are generous for most leave-on categories, but as a skin sensitiser it's still worth keeping leave-on skincare to around 1-2% of the total formulation. Always patch test the finished blend.
Aromatherapy & Diffuser Blend
For a clean, purifying blend, try 2 drops Manuka with 2 drops Eucalyptus and 1 drop Lemon; for a grounding evening blend, combine 2 drops Manuka with 2 drops Cedarwood and 1 drop Lavender.
Cold-Process Soap
Manuka performs well in cold-process soap at 2-4% of total oil weight, giving a fresh, herbal-woody scent that holds well through cure, and pairs nicely with Tea Tree or Rosemary.
