Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus reticulata)

Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus reticulata) is cold pressed from the peel, producing an orange-yellow to dark orange liquid with a characteristic sweet, citrusy, zesty aroma. Of all the citrus oils, Mandarin is often considered the sweetest and most calming, making it a gentle, uplifting choice for evening diffuser blends.

Mandarin is a favourite for children and parents alike, popular in bedtime diffuser blends for its soothing, calming character. In massage oils and body-care formulations, it's valued for supporting healthy circulation and easing a sense of tension, and it's a common inclusion in pregnancy-friendly body-care blends for its gentle, comforting scent.

This one deserves a little extra care: Mandarin Essential Oil is a flammable liquid, a mild skin irritant and a skin sensitiser, and may be fatal if swallowed and enters the airways. Dilute before topical use, patch test first, and never ingest.

Usage & Formulation Guide ▼

For soap makers, natural perfumers and cosmetic formulators. These are starting points, not finished formulas — always confirm compliance, stability and safety for your own finished product before use — see the IFRA Usage Guidelines document.

Fine Fragrance & Perfumery Accord
Mandarin's sweet, soft citrus note is a gentle top note in fine fragrance — try it at 5-10% of the fragrance concentrate; this generous whole material carries no restriction in fine fragrance under IFRA.

Skincare & Massage Oil Inclusion Rate
Mandarin has genuinely generous headroom for leave-on skincare and massage oils — up to around 28% of the total formulation per its IFRA category limit — though most formulators use far less, around 1-3%, for a pleasant scent level.

Aromatherapy & Diffuser Blend
For a calming evening blend, try 2 drops Mandarin with 1 drop Lavender and 1 drop Chamomile Roman; for an uplifting daytime blend, combine with Bergamot and Geranium.

Cold-Process Soap
Mandarin is fully unrestricted in rinse-off products under IFRA and performs well in cold-process soap at 3-5% of total oil weight for a sweet, cheerful citrus scent.
