Clary Sage Essential oil
Clary Sage Essential oil
Clary Sage Essential Oil (Salvia sclarea)
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops, yielding a clear to pale yellow liquid with a sweet, herbaceous, slightly floral aroma. It has long been valued in aromatherapy as a warming, deeply relaxing nerve tonic, prized for its soothing, uplifting effect on the emotions.
Diffused, Clary Sage is traditionally used to ease nervous tension, stress, anxiety and insomnia, to lift a low mood, and to support a more positive, creative outlook — some also find it enhances dream recall. In a well-diluted massage blend, it's traditionally reached for to ease muscular aches, menstrual cramps and general tension.
Clary Sage is also known for a mild estrogen-like activity, and is traditionally used to help support hormonal balance around the menstrual cycle and menopause. Blended into a cream or lotion, it's traditionally used for oily or blemish-prone skin, to help balance sebum production, and — diluted into a carrier oil such as jojoba — massaged into the scalp to support hair growth.
A little care goes a long way: as with most essential oils, always dilute Clary Sage before applying it to the skin and do a quick patch test first. It's best to skip alcohol while using it, as together they can leave you feeling more drowsy than usual. Because of its natural hormone-balancing character, check with your healthcare provider before using during pregnancy or if you're being treated for a hormone-sensitive condition.

In a diffuser, Clary Sage is traditionally used for nervous tension, stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia and menopause, and to help ease a low mood while boosting creativity and intuition.

Well diluted in a massage oil or in the bath, Clary Sage is traditionally used to help ease muscle pain, menstrual cramps, PMS, stress, nervous tension and insomnia.
Blended in a cream/base cream
Diluted into a cream or lotion, Clary Sage is traditionally used for oily or blemish-prone skin, to help balance sebum production, and for general body odor. Diluted into a carrier oil such as jojoba, it's traditionally massaged into the scalp to support hair growth.
Blends Well With
| Although essential oils blend well with one another, Clary Sage oil goes particularly well with other essential oils such as juniper, lavender, pine, geranium, sandalwood, jasmine, frankincense and various citrus oils. |
Usage & Formulation Guide ▼
For soap makers, natural perfumers and cosmetic formulators. These are starting points, not finished formulas — always confirm compliance, stability and safety (including IFRA usage limits) for your own finished product before use.
Fine Fragrance & Perfumery
Clary Sage's bright, herbaceous opening, sweet nutty heart and dry, wine-like base note make it a distinctive addition to fougère and chypre accords and to herbaceous/aromatic colognes. It layers particularly well with bergamot, lavender, sandalwood and juniper berry. Clary Sage oil and its principal ester, linalyl acetate, are well-tolerated, low-restriction fragrance materials — always check the current IFRA Standard and your supplier's certificate for the limit that applies to your specific finished product category.
Massage Oil for Menstrual & Hormonal Comfort
For a traditional hormone-balance/menstrual-comfort blend, dilute Clary Sage to around 2% in a carrier oil such as jojoba or fractionated coconut oil for abdominal or lower-back massage. As noted above, avoid this blend during pregnancy or if you're managing a hormone-sensitive condition, and check with a healthcare provider first.
Aromatherapy & Diffuser Blends
For a relaxing, sleep-supportive evening blend, try diffusing 3 drops Clary Sage with 2 drops lavender and 1 drop frankincense. Its herbaceous-floral profile also pairs well with sandalwood or citrus oils for a calming, mood-lifting atmosphere.
Cold-Process Soap
Clary Sage has a soft, relatively subtle scent throw in cold-process soap, so is best used at 0.5–1% of total oil weight. Because it doesn't carry strongly on its own, many soap makers anchor it with a heavier base note such as sandalwood to help the scent hold through cure and use.
