Blue Tansy Essential Oil (Tanacetum annuum)

Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum) essential oil is a rare, highly prized oil known for its deep blue colour and calming properties. Distilled from the plant's flowering tops, it gets its distinctive colour from chamazulene, a compound that forms during steam distillation.

Blue Tansy is widely used in skincare and aromatherapy for its soothing, balancing effects. Its sweet, warm herbaceous aroma with camphor top notes makes it a beautiful addition to blends designed for relaxation, emotional grounding, and skin care formulations.

In skincare, Blue Tansy is valued for its calming, comforting qualities, making it popular in products for sensitive or stressed skin. In aromatherapy, it's known for helping create a sense of calm and emotional balance.

Safety note: A little goes a long way with this potent oil — it is typically used at very low dilution (0.5–1%) and its deep colour can stain skin, fabric and equipment if used carelessly. It may cause skin sensitisation in some people, so always dilute well and patch test first.

Burners and vaporizers
In vapor therapy, Blue Tansy's sweet, herbaceous aroma can help create a calm, emotionally grounded atmosphere.

Blended massage oil or in the bath
Well diluted (0.5–1%) in a massage oil or the bath, Blue Tansy is used for its soothing effect on stressed or sensitive skin and its calming, balancing effect on the mind.

Blended in a cream/base cream
As a constituent in a blended base cream, Blue Tansy is a favourite in premium skincare and facial oils for comforting stressed or sensitive skin — added in small amounts, since its deep colour can stain if overused.

Blends Well With

Although essential oils blend well with one another, Blue Tansy oil goes particularly well with other essential oils such as geranium, clary sage, spearmint, ylang ylang and lavender.
Usage & Formulation Guide ▼

For soap makers, natural perfumers and cosmetic formulators. These are starting points, not finished formulas — always confirm compliance, stability and safety (including IFRA usage limits) for your own finished product before use.

Fine fragrance & natural perfumery
Use sparingly, at around 0.1–0.3% of the finished fragrance concentrate — Blue Tansy's intense colour and powerful herbaceous-camphoraceous odour dominate a composition even in trace amounts. It works as a heart-note accent in aromatic fougère, chypre and herbal-floral accords alongside lavender, clary sage and bergamot. It carries sensitisation potential, so check current IFRA Standards for Tanacetum annuum oil before finalising a formula.

Leave-on skincare
In calming, anti-redness serums and facial oils, include at 0.5–1% of the total oil phase (for example, around 1ml in 99ml of a carrier such as rosehip seed oil) — in line with the low-dilution approach recommended for this oil generally. For targeted spot treatments on blemish-prone skin, some formulators go as low as 0.5% in a light carrier like jojoba. Always patch test the finished formulation.

Aromatherapy & diffuser blends
A classic calming blend combines 3 drops Blue Tansy with 5 drops Lavender and 2 drops Frankincense. Its aroma is so dominant that Blue Tansy should always remain the minor note by volume in any blend.

Cold-process & melt-and-pour soap
Use at roughly 0.5–0.7% of oil weight (about 5–7ml per kg of base). Chamazulene can tint soap blue-green, particularly in lighter bases, and the shade may shift further during saponification and cure — test a small batch first before committing a full run.
