Sesame Oil
Sesame Oil
Sesame Oil
Sesame Oil is a versatile carrier oil with over 5,000 years of recorded use, dating back to ancient Egypt, and long valued in Ayurvedic practice.
Naturally rich in oleic and linoleic acids, vitamin E, and minerals including calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc, Sesame Oil also contains sesamin and sesamolin — naturally occurring lignans reported to contribute antioxidant properties and to support the oil's own long shelf life.
In Ayurvedic tradition, Sesame Oil has long been used in daily self-massage (abhyanga) and has been reported to help cleanse and soothe minor skin irritation, soften and moisturise skin, and strengthen and nourish hair, though this reflects traditional and anecdotal use rather than clinical evidence, and individual results vary. It has also traditionally been associated with easing vata-related discomfort such as poor circulation, bloating and dryness, and has been reported by some to have a calming effect when used in self-massage routines — though this is not a substitute for medical or mental-health treatment, and anyone with a diagnosed condition should consult a healthcare professional.
Apply directly to skin or hair as a moisturiser or treatment, or use as a massage oil. For formulations, blend at 10–30% into creams, lotions or massage oils. Test small batches to perfect your recipe.
Botanical Name: Sesamum indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil.
Safety information: generally well tolerated on all skin types; individual sensitivity is uncommon but possible. Sesame is a recognised food allergen — see the allergen note below. A patch test is recommended before first use — see the Safety Data Sheet and Ingredient & Allergen Statement in the Product Documents section below for full detail.
