Beginner Guide to Melt & Pour Soap

Beginner Guide to Melt & Pour Soap

Melt & Pour Soap making is one of the easiest ways to start creating your own handmade soaps. It’s perfect for beginners because the soap base has already gone through the saponification process, meaning you simply melt it, customise it, and pour it into moulds.

With just a few ingredients and simple tools, you can create beautiful soaps for yourself, gifts, or even a small business.

What is Melt & Pour Soap?

Melt & Pour soap is a pre-made soap base that can be melted down and customised with fragrances, colours, oils, and botanicals.

Because the hard work is already done, you don’t need to handle lye or wait weeks for soap to cure.

This makes it:

Quick to make

What You Need to Get Started

To make melt & pour soap you only need a few simple ingredients.

Basic ingredients:

Melt & Pour Soap Base (Goat Milk, Shea Butter, Clear, Aloe Vera etc.)

Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil

Soap Colourants (optional)

Soap Molds

Basic tools:

Microwave safe jug or double boiler

Knife and cutting board

Stirring stick

Spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol (to remove bubbles)

Basic Melt & Pour Soap Method
1. Cut the Soap Base

Cut the soap base into small cubes. This helps it melt evenly and faster.

2. Melt the Soap

Place the cubes into a microwave safe jug or double boiler and melt slowly.

If using a microwave, heat in 20–30 second bursts, stirring between each interval.

3. Add Fragrance and Colour

Once fully melted, add your fragrance oil or essential oil and any colourants.

Typical usage rates:

Fragrance oils: 1–2%

Essential oils: 0.5–1%

Stir gently to avoid creating bubbles.

4. Pour Into Moulds

Carefully pour the melted soap into your moulds.

If bubbles appear on the surface, lightly spray with isopropyl alcohol.

5. Let the Soap Set

Allow the soap to cool and harden. This usually takes 1–2 hours depending on mould size.

6. Remove from Mould

Once fully set, gently remove the soap from the mould.

Your soap is now ready to use or package.

Popular Melt & Pour Additives

You can customise your soaps with many natural ingredients.

Popular additions include:

Oatmeal (gentle exfoliation)

Honey (moisturising)

Dried flowers

Clay colourants

Activated charcoal

Coffee grounds

Poppy seeds

Tips for Success

Don’t overheat the soap base — this can cause sweating and poor texture.

Add botanicals sparingly to avoid clogging drains.

Always mix fragrance thoroughly.

Spray alcohol to remove surface bubbles.

Work quickly once the soap is melted.

Best Melt & Pour Soap Bases

Different bases create different types of soap.

Popular options include:

Goat Milk Soap Base – creamy and moisturising

Shea Butter Soap Base – nourishing and rich

Clear Soap Base – perfect for bright colours and embeds

Aloe Vera Soap Base – soothing for sensitive skin

💡 PureFX Tip:
